We had breakfast at 8:30 together with an English couple who were also staying at the B&B.
After breakfast we headed off for a walk up the hill overlooking Chipping Camden. The walk took us past lots of stone cottages, through fields with grazing sheep and back down to the town.
On the way through the town, we checked out some of the shops and restaurants. It is truly a fascinating and beautiful village. Almost all the buildings are made from stone and timber.
At about 1pm, we set off to visit Stratford-Upon-Avon which is only about 20 minutes by car from Chipping Camden. We took the advice of Jane from the B&B and parked in the car park across the canal from the town instead of tackling the traffic in the town.
To get across the canal, we caught a small ferry that took only about a dozen passengers. The driver stands on the ferry and turns a large handle to winch the ferry across the canal.
We walked through the town until we found the double-decker site-seeing bus that tours the town. The guide gave a very informative commentary throughout the trip. You were encouraged to hop off the bus at any of the sites and then join a subsequent bus in the fleet.
On the tour, we went past Shakespeare's birthplace, Anne Hathaway's cottage, Mary Arden's house and many others. Jane had told us that Anne Hathaway's cottage was not as interesting as Mary Arden's house. So we got off the bus at Mary Arden's house.
This showed the way people lived 400 years ago. There were actors dressed in the clothes of the day performing typical farmyard tasks. The farmyard had hens, sheep and pigs. When you walk through the houses, you need to duck to avoid hitting your head on the timber beams. They must have been very short in those days.
One of the highlights of this location was a demonstration of falconry. The trainer let us participate. She gave us a thick leather glove to protect our arm, placed food in our hand and then encouraged the bird to fly across the paddock to land on the glove and eat the food.
We were back at the B&B by 5pm. We decided to eat at a local restaurant in Chipping Camden tonight and set off at about 6:30pm to explore the possibilities.
The place we went to was a hotel in the main street. Speaking of the main street, it was very quiet for a Friday night. The hotel had lots of character. Even the bar was constructed with stonework.
I tried several different local beers - two were good but I didn't bother finishing the other one. The food was fine but the best part was getting to chat to some of the locals.
