Today we had a long way to travel because we had to pick up Nicky in London and then drive to Cornwall. So we had arranged to have breakfast at 7am. It was worth getting up for – a nice country breakfast – probably the best breakfast of our trip so far.
We left the B&B before 8am and arrived at Nicky and John’s unit about 9am. About half an hour later, the four of us set off for Cornwall. It took us a while to get through all the narrow suburban streets in London before joining the M4 for over 100 miles. This took us to the M5, then the A30 and the A39.
At about 11:30am, we stopped for a coffee break at a roadside service centre (Welcome Break) near Membury and then stopped for lunch at about 1:30pm at another roadside service centre (RoadChef) near Taunton. So far, we prefer Welcome Break because it is cleaner and has a better atmosphere.
Except for a few hold-ups because of roadworks, we had a good run and reached Malpas by 4:30pm. Malpas is a tiny village a few miles from Truro. We had rented a house (not a B&B this time) for a few days. The owner had told us to pick up the key from the post office.
The house (Blythe Cottage) is a very pretty cottage with a relaxing view of the river. It has three bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. Downstairs there is a lounge room and kitchen.
The people who built it must have been very short because the ceilings are low. There are several areas where I have to stoop to avoid hitting my head. I guess it is inevitable that I’ll hit my head at some stage over the next few days.
Initially, it seemed that there was no mobile phone reception and when I set up my laptop, I found there was no internet reception either. There is no landline phone in the house and so, apart from the TV, we seemed to be completed cut off from communication with the outside world.
However, Steph found that if she sat on the window sill in her bedroom, she got one bar of reception on her mobile phone and so was able to make calls.
After settling in, the three girls drove to Truro to find a supermarket to buy food and supplies. I asked them to look for an internet cafe or WiFi access in Truro.
For dinner, we went to the pub which is only two houses away. At first they told us they were booked out but we found a small table in the corner and they agreed to serve us dinner there. It turned out to be a nice meal.
